Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Phoenix, AZ

Obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, is a challenging mental health condition characterized by persistent, unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviors. Many who suffer from OCD feel overwhelmed and controlled by their compulsions. At Serenity Mental Health Centers, our mission is to provide support and strategies to our patients, helping them navigate and manage their OCD symptoms. We believe in empowering individuals to regain command over their lives, making day-to-day living smoother and more manageable. If you're battling the effects of OCD, know that support in Phoenix, AZ is just a phone call away.

A variety of treatment approaches are available for managing OCD, with prescription medication being among the most commonly recommended options. However, we understand that one size does not fit all when it comes to treatment. That's why we also offer innovative therapies like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine therapy, providing alternatives for those who might experience adverse effects from medication.

TMS therapy offers a noninvasive route to relief, utilizing magnetic pulses to target the brain areas implicated in OCD, thereby alleviating symptoms without the need for medication. Similarly, ketamine therapy, administered intravenously, has been shown to quickly reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, which are often intertwined with OCD, offering a beacon of hope for rapid symptom relief.

Regardless of the chosen path, our dedicated team is committed to walking alongside each patient. We strive to tailor a treatment plan that best fits their unique needs, ensuring a supportive and understanding journey towards managing their OCD symptoms.

OCD is thought to result from a mix of genetic, neurological, and environmental influences. Studies indicate that changes in brain structure and function, especially in areas that regulate anxiety and impulse control, may play a role in OCD development. A family history of OCD or other mental health conditions can also raise the likelihood of experiencing OCD.

OCD symptoms usually involve recurring, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that create high levels of anxiety. To manage this anxiety, individuals often feel compelled to perform certain repetitive actions or mental rituals (compulsions). Some common OCD symptoms include:

Obsessions:

  • Intense fear of contamination or germs
  • Worries about harming oneself or others
  • Strong need for symmetry or order
  • Intrusive thoughts about violence or inappropriate actions

Compulsions:

  • Excessive hand-washing or cleaning
  • Repeatedly checking things, like doors or appliances
  • Counting or arranging items in a specific way
  • Mental rituals, such as repeating certain phrases

Excellent experience. From the initial phone interview, filling out the intake paperwork, and the easy process of email reminders, the tech driven process at S.M.H.C turned what is usually a very sterile and boring procedure into a very comprehensive and informative one every step of the way. They even have an app! My clinician was understanding and provided me with a safe space to voice my concerns and was extremely helpful in structuring a treatment plan. I was reluctant to seek treatment and, as a result, went untreated for many years. Serenity Mental Health Centers, and specifically Brenda Sanchez, gave me everything I needed to realize how foolish it was to have waited so long. If you're on the fence about seeking Mental health services, or shopping for a good provider to switch to, let this be your sign.

Brenda Sanchez has helped me and my twin sister tremendously. She listens, then finds solutions. I struggle with depression, anxiety, and OCD. Since seeing her, I am now on a medication (which she made sure we were comfortable with), and this has changed my life. I can do normal human things that I couldn’t do before. Can’t be more thankful for Brenda and the team at Serenity for helping me.

This facility has changed my life for the better. Before coming here I was unable to function day to day due to anxiety and depression. With their help and a lot of hard work I now have productive days not only at home but in my work life as well. Tommy Butler has taken care of me so well, I still go to him despite my insurance being out of network, and that says a lot.

I’ve had a great history working with Jennifer madu—I’m not sure if I’d still be a patient at serenity if it weren’t for her. She’s very supportive but she tells it like it is and has really helped me with my mental health.

OCD is identified through an extensive examination conducted by one of our board-certified psychiatrists. This diagnosis typically involves an in-depth clinical interview examining the individual's symptoms, medical and psychological history, and overall mental health. During the evaluation, we focus on identifying obsessions, which are persistent, unwanted thoughts, and compulsions, which are the repetitive actions or mental rituals undertaken to reduce distress. The diagnostic process may also incorporate standardized questionnaires or rating scales to assess the intensity of the symptoms. This comprehensive method ensures a precise diagnosis and assists in crafting a personalized treatment plan that meets the specific requirements of the individual.
